Phi Beta Sigma is one of the oldest and most storied historically African-American fraternities in the country. Formed at Howard University in 1914, its members have included civil rights leaders like John Lewis, television personalities like Al Roker, and professional athletes like Jerry Rice. For generations, Phi Beta Sigma has empowered men of culture to dedicate themselves to community service and academics. It is a member of the National Pan-Hellenic Council and boasts 225,000 members with nearly 600 chapters today.
Phi Beta Sigma came to Black Digital seeking to revamp their existing website. The original version featured too much white space and lacked the graphics and design features needed to hold visitors’ attention. It didn’t accurately reflect the organization’s colors, which are a central and identifying component for any Greek organization.
We also discovered functional issues that made the site difficult to use. Specifically, slow loading times caused frustration for web visitors and there was also an issue of broken links and poor redirects that created 404 errors when attempting to access pages on the main navigation menu that no longer existed.
Black Digital created a website layout with a cleaner, more modern design. By focusing on still images and honing in on Phi Beta Sigma’s official brand colors of blue and white, we designed a homepage that accurately reflected the organization’s brand. Likewise, by integrating historic and modern images of past and present members, we were able to underscore the organization’s emphasis on community and brotherhood.
To make Phi Beta Sigma’s website more functional, we began by building a new wireframe. Additionally, we overhauled the navigation experience, removed dead links, and created a more intuitive information structure. As part of our branding strategy, we also worked to update existing infographics to match the site’s redesign.
Phi Beta Sigma’s new website is stunning and ensures easy navigation. Loading times are much improved, enabling users to seamlessly browse back and forth between pages.
