Level Up Your Storytelling – Turn Ideas Into Impact

Following the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, Upwardly Global needed to elevate Afghan newcomers’ voices while connecting those stories to employment, legal-status, and inclusion advocacy. The campaign had to communicate a complex crisis without reducing people to statistics or speaking over the professionals it was meant to support, and it had to work across every medium the audience and advocacy partners would encounter it in, not just one destination.
Black Digital supported the campaign across brand, publication design, web, video, and storytelling: designing and developing a dedicated Afghan Response microsite, producing multimedia video stories of Afghan professionals restarting their careers, creating publication and resource design for longer-form policy context, building campaign graphics, social content, and digital advertising, and developing advocacy materials supporting the Afghan Adjustment Act. The campaign was built as a connected system rather than a single launch: the microsite held the deeper personal stories, publications added policy context, video carried the human stories further than text alone could, and social and paid media created entry points for new audiences. Ongoing maintenance kept the platform current as legal and workforce conditions evolved after the initial crisis response.
Crisis communications work carries real responsibility to the people it represents. This campaign gave Upwardly Global a way to advocate for Afghan professionals with dignity, connecting their stories directly to concrete employment outcomes rather than treating the crisis as a passing news cycle.
