Brand Identity System for the 2026 NSBE Convention

Working with the Black Digital team is honestly a highlight of my week. You make the process easy, collaborative, and fun while delivering high-quality work that moves NSBE forward.

Client Overview

The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is one of the largest student-governed organizations in the country, with a mission to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community. With more than 24,000 members across collegiate, professional, NSBE Jr., and international communities, NSBE serves a broad and diverse constituency spanning students in grades 3 through 12, undergraduate and graduate students, PhD candidates, and working professionals.

The NSBE Annual Convention is the organization’s flagship event and one of the largest gathering of Black engineers and STEM professionals in the world. The 2026 convention took place March 18 through 22 in Baltimore, Maryland, under the theme Advancing S.T.E.M.

Project Overview

Black Digital served as NSBE’s creative and digital agency partner for the 2026 Annual Convention, providing an integrated suite of branding, design, and web services over the course of the planning cycle. This case study focuses on the convention brand identity system: the visual language, creative assets, and design infrastructure that supported marketing, promotion, and onsite experience from pre-registration through the event itself.

The brand work encompassed over 20 distinct deliverable categories, all built from a unified creative foundation developed collaboratively with the NSBE marketing and communications team.
Challenge

NSBE’s Annual Convention serves multiple distinct audiences simultaneously. Collegiate students, NSBE Jr. members, lifetime and professional members, sponsors and exhibitors, regional chapter leaders, and press all engage with the event for different reasons, on different timelines, and through different channels.

Creating a convention brand system for an event of this scale means producing creative that works at every level: polished enough for a national stage, flexible enough for dozens of asset types, and clear enough to be used consistently by an internal communications team across months of promotion.

The brand also needed to support a wide range of formats and platforms, including social media, email, PowerPoint decks, physical signage, digital billboards, print collateral, and onsite environmental graphics, while maintaining a consistent look and feel throughout.

Our Approach

Black Digital began with the development of two creative concept directions, presenting distinct options for theme interpretation, tone, and visual style for NSBE’s review. Once a direction was selected, the team built out a full convention branding guide with color palette, typography, iconography, and layout guidelines that could scale across all asset categories.

The team worked closely with NSBE’s communications coordinators through a structured cadence of weekly and then biweekly check-in calls, supplemented by a deliverable tracker that gave both teams real-time visibility into progress, feedback cycles, and outstanding items.

Creative development prioritized audience flexibility, ensuring that assets could be adapted for different segments, including collegiate students, professional members, sponsors, and chapter leadership, while maintaining brand cohesion across all touchpoints.
