Institute for Sustainable Communities: Using a repeatable editorial system to make global sustainability work clear

Overview

ISC’s annual report content spanned multiple regions, sectors, and program types, including financial data, international partnerships, environmental justice initiatives, and workforce development programs. Organizing that volume of complex information into something clear, compelling, and accessible was the central design challenge, especially for an organization working across equitable building decarbonization in the U.S. and sustainable manufacturing programs abroad, which needed a report structure flexible enough to hold genuinely different program types without feeling disjointed.

Black Digital developed a structured editorial framework balancing clarity with storytelling, built a consistent grid system allowing diverse content to coexist within one visual structure, created strong section openers for each major initiative, and used data visualization to make complex program outcomes accessible, all built around repeatable templates supporting future annual reports.
