Key Complexity:
40% mobile traffic requiring mobile-first design with desktop parity; API integration with existing YourMembership platform; member authentication and security; content consolidation (150+ pages with redundancies); audience segmentation (physicians, medical students, community partners)
The National Medical Association, founded in 1895 and representing 30,000+ African American physicians nationwide, approached Black Digital with a website that was undermining its mission. Poor member experience, slow performance (especially on mobile), outdated content structure, and a critical security gap made the site a liability rather than an asset.
Most problematic: the member portal was accessible to non-members. For an organization whose core value is exclusive access to research, job boards, and peer networks, this security failure was a fundamental breach of the membership model.
Black Digital began with a comprehensive site audit using Google Analytics and behavioral data to identify content redundancies. Rather than migrate everything, the team consolidated and archived pages that weren’t serving members.
The rebuild prioritized a mobile-first approach. With 40% of traffic coming from mobile, physicians needed equal functionality on phones as on desktop. The solution wasn’t building two sites—it was designing one responsive experience that worked seamlessly across devices.
For the membership experience, Black Digital built the site as a front door, then connected it to the existing YourMembership platform via API. This enabled single sign-on and secured member-only sections directly within the main site. Physicians no longer needed separate logins or a disconnected portal experience.
Three audience-specific landing pages were created: one for physicians, one for medical students, one for community partners. Each had tailored entry points and resource priorities.
WordPress was selected because it’s maintainable by non-technical staff long-term, ensuring the organization wouldn’t be dependent on external developers for routine updates.
Authenticated member sections are now secure—only logged-in physicians see exclusive resources. Single sign-on means physicians log in once and have seamless access to their profile, job boards, and research libraries without navigating multiple platforms.
Operationally, the closed security gap increased perceived membership value. Physicians could finally see what they were paying for. The consolidated content structure eliminated the frustration of scrolling through redundant information.
The organization’s marketing team can update content independently without requesting developer support, ensuring the site stays current as membership resources evolve.
