CEEJH: Using flexible brand strategy to unify research, advocacy, and community work

CEEJH worked with Black Digital for a nonprofit brand strategy built to represent research, advocacy, and community engagement.

Overview

CEEJH needed one flexible identity system that could represent research, advocacy, and community engagement work clearly and consistently, without looking like a different organization depending on which part of it was communicating. After 11 years of work, the organization needed a mark and visual language substantial enough to position it as a national and global leader on environmental, climate, and energy injustice, not just a refresh of the old logo.

Black Digital started with discovery grounded in the organization’s own values: community, co-development, accountability, care, liberation, and joy, drawn directly from the 17 Principles of Environmental Justice and the Jemez Principles for Democratic Organizing that guide CEEJH’s work. From there, the team developed three distinct creative directions rather than one safe option. The first built a logomark from sky, sun, land, and leaves inside a self-contained circular form, tying engagement and community into the environmental symbolism directly. The second used a tree to represent the interconnection between community wellbeing and the environment, with green leaves for nature, yellow for the sun, and the trunk standing in for the people who make up CEEJH’s communities. The third leaned into empowerment and activism more directly, paired with an intentionally organic, slightly irregular typeface to reflect the organization’s grassroots character. Each direction came with its own color palette and typography system, built and presented side by side so CEEJH’s stakeholders could react to real, distinct options rather than variations on a single idea. The engagement moved through defined rounds, discovery and initial logo proof, a first round of revisions alongside color and typography refinement, then a final round of revisions before the complete brand kit was delivered, giving CEEJH’s team structured checkpoints to weigh in at each stage rather than a single take-it-or-leave-it reveal.

A research and advocacy organization’s credibility depends on presenting itself consistently across very different audiences. This identity gave CEEJH one visual language flexible enough to carry that weight, built through real back-and-forth with the people who’d have to live with it.

Once the identity was approved, Black Digital carried it into the materials CEEJH actually uses day to day: brand voice and messaging guidelines, business cards, letterhead, a one-pager, an email banner template, newsletter design, zoom backgrounds, a donor and sponsorship package, and social media templates. A logo only pays off once it shows up consistently everywhere an organization communicates, and this rollout gave CEEJH’s team a ready-to-use kit rather than a mark they’d have to reinterpret for every new asset.
