DC Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement: Using invitation-only event design to build a safe space for men affected by violence

Overview

ONSE needed an invitation-only mental-health event designed around privacy, dignity, and emotional safety for men affected by violence, requiring a different production approach than a typical public program. An invitation-only mental health program for men affected by violence needs an environment that feels safe enough for real conversation, so Black Digital designed the Talk & Cigars event experience around privacy and safety, coordinated venue and vendor logistics for the invitation-only format, and delivered event materials appropriate for the program’s sensitive purpose, prioritizing emotional safety over conventional event promotion tactics. The approach moved through four phases: strategy and stakeholder consultation, vendor and venue management that included securing a clinician to lead a healing circle and identifying plain-clothed, unobtrusive security, equipment and logistics for a respectful, serene atmosphere, and a post-event phase built around participant feedback and a full outcomes report rather than treating the event as finished the moment it ended.

Results

• 40 invited participants at the Talk & Cigars event
• A full-service event build spanning venue, AV, a clinician-led healing circle, and unobtrusive security, coordinated as one program rather than separate vendor bookings

Mental health programming for men affected by violence only works if participants feel genuinely safe. This event gave ONSE a space built specifically for that trust.
